India vs China Hair Extension – The Differences & Best Indian Hair Extension Review

It’s difficult to tell the differences between Indian and Chinese hair extensions by simply looking at the packaging due to plenty of misleading manufacturers. After extension research and going through various reports we came to know the differences between the two and also the different hair extensions available. So, let’s explore.

India vs China Hair Extension

Where does hair from hair extensions come from?

  • Indian Hair

India is widely considered as one of the most reputed places to source hair. Temples, salons and combed hair are the three sources of hair in India.

Temples: Hindu temples are the best source for high quality, virgin hair extensions. World-famous temples in southern India like Tirupati Temple is the most visited holy place and also the largest collector of human hair. Throughout the year, millions of devotees visit the different temples in southern India to sacrifice their hair as a ritual offering to God which is then sold through auctions. Due to this common practice and low labor price, India makes cheap, high-quality hair weave.

Combed hair waste: In India, peddlers go door-to-door to purchase the combed waste in exchange for a small fee or plastic goods like hair clips or buckets.

Salon: Salon owners also sell their customer’s trimmed hair that is used for a lesser-quality hair extension.

  • Chinese Hair

Chinese hair has a negative impact in the extension industry because it is considered low-quality hair that is not donated or shaved directly, but fallen hair.

Natural and untreated Chinese hair is in it’s natural for is not suitable for hair extensions. They are coarse and thick. So, they are chemically processed to be used as hair extensions. After the treatment, the hair loses its shine and gets a rough texture. To fix that, many Chinese hair extensions are coated with silicones and even mixed with synthetic hair strands or animal hair.

This plastic mixed, fallen hair is the cheapest tier of hair collected from hairbrushes, salon floors, and drains. However, it is okay for some users because it’s a less expensive version of a higher quality and elusive hair- virgin Remy.

But you must be careful about not being tricked by buying Chinese hair being marketed as Remy hair.

Key Differences between Indian and Chinese Hair Weave

  • Hair Texture:

Indian hair is fine, soft, and silky with a natural lustrous shine. Its naturally wavy, curly and straight texture is loved by Indian women. Also, they are easy to maintain, dye well and can be customized/styled easily.

Chinese hair is coarse, thick and poker-straight in its natural form but aggressively processed to make them soft, shiny and textured. Chinese hair has a bad reputation so they brand their hair from a different country, thus selling them to inexperienced salons and consumers. This low-quality hair is cheaper but cannot be heat styled, straightened or curled.

  • Quality:

Indian hair is soft, airy and available in natural wave, curly, straight, deep wave and body wave type. It can be easily customized and styled, making them suitable for almost every hair type.

As the natural hair texture is almost destroyed in heavy chemical processing, the quality of Chinese hair extension is very low with a strong chemical smell.

  • Durability:

Indian hair weave is more durable and easily lasts more than a year or two, while Chinese hair extension hardly lasts for 6 months.

  • Tangle:

Indian hair extension is natural, soft and silky so they are less prone to tangling. Whereas, the Chinese hair extensions stay nice for the first few months, but tend to tangle and start shedding after a few washes.

The hair cuticle has scales like the fish scales that point in the same direction. But in the combed waste, the hair is mangled up and the scales point in opposite directions when disentangled, causing it to knot and tangle. So, in China, they strip off the cuticle through acid wash that resolves the tangling.

  • Processing:

Indian hair is unprocessed virgin hair. While Chinese hair is heavily processed – heated, bleached and treated with silicon to look nice at first glance. But they easily matte cannot be styled or dyed well.

Most of the highest quality hair weaves and wigs bought in the world originate in India.

Is Remy hair Indian hair?

India is the supplier of the top quality ‘pure virgin hair extension’ that’s unprocessed and the ‘Remy hair’ that has the cuticles facing in the same direction and collected from a single person’s head.
